ASHER PRIOR

Weight: 51kg (contest) 56kg (off-season)

Height: 156cm

Occupation: Mum, Primary School Teacher, Personal Trainer & IFBB Amateur Figure Athlete

Before fitness & figure:

Dance, gymnastics, sports aerobics – it’s all I lived and breathed when I was younger. I got my first gym membership at 16. I wanted to improve my strength to do one-arm one-leg push ups and crazy whole body balances like I saw my sport aerobics idols doing. This was the beginning of my affair with weight training.

How I got into competing:

In 2006 I was getting bored in the gym so treated myself to some personal training, little did I know that my trainer Vicki was also a figure competitor, prepping some girls for a local show – She didn’t have to twist my arm, I needed a challenge! I went to that first show without having even seen even a photo of a line up so it was a very steep learning curve, but I feel in love with the sport and the lifestyle immediately. I found my joy and never looked back.

Kid and/or compete?

Having my daughter in 2008 was life-changing. Shifting from the ‘all about me’ to the ‘all about bub’ mentality really rocked my world, but the fire in my belly remained.

I weight trained during the pregnancy and ate a well-balanced diet that included extra nutrition for the baby (and the odd M&M McFlurry craving!) I always knew that I would continue competing, so I knew that any excess weight that went on would mean excess effort to get it off.

After Myalee was born, I struggled with finding a routine for training and eating, not to mention the guilt over taking time for myself.

But I persevered and now appreciate that she teaches me flexibility, perspective and balance. In turn, I give her knowledge, structure and health. Living the ‘figure momma lifestyle’ is challenging, but special.

Present:

To be competitive in the IFBB Figure line ups I knew that I had to improve my physique and develop the best peaking strategy for my body. Thanks to the expert skills of my coach, Nathan Page, we have made some excellent advancement in these areas. Now I have the prestigious opportunity to compete at the Arnold Amateur Classic in 2013. There is so much I want to achieve and this is the cream in the middle of my cake (it’s got a lot of layers).

The sport of Figure has shaped my life and taught me about being a strong woman.  I look forward to sharing my knowledge and skills with future athlete and clients.
