Birthday

February 3rd, I’m not ashamed to admit that I am 36 years old and feel in the best shape of my life.

About you!

I have always been active and involved in sport of some kind or another (Netball, Tennis, Rowing, Athletics).  I have always enjoyed being fit and active. I first started going to a gym around the age of 21 when I started full time work as I didn’t have time for competitive team sports any longer.

Most of my time was spent like most women undertaking group classes and cardio.  I gradually started lifting weights with the guidance of a personal trainer.  But it took another ten years to really understand that lifting weights and good clean nutrition was the key to totally transforming my body.

What Inspired Your Desire to Compete in a Figure Competition?

It started when I bought an American version of Oxygen Magazine back in my early 20’s and seeing the toned and muscular bodies of Monica Brant and Jen Hendershott.  I kept dreaming of one day having a body like theirs.  However there was always a little doubt in the back of my mind as to whether I could do it and what people may think of a girl with muscles.

Sadly it took my divorce at the age of 35, reaching my heaviest ever weight and reaching my lowest emotional point where I found the courage and desire to finally do something for me and undertake something I had thought about but until then hadn’t had the courage to do.

Finding my trainer Odette Lydford from Sculpt Her Personal Training at my Gym was the next green light to my dream. The confidence and sense of achievement I obtained from competing was amazing.

Achievements in the sport

INBA Qld Titles Sept 2009    Figure Novice 6th
INBA Brisbane Titles May 2010 Figure Intermediate 2nd, Figure International 4th
ANB Asia Pacific May 2010 Figure Novice 3rd

Most memorable

My first competition (INBA Qld Titles Sept 2009) was definitely memorable as I had finally found the courage to do it.  I didn’t place but I had caught the bug and went on to get in even better shape leading up to the INBA Brisbane Titles in May 2010. My next most memorable achievement was getting a full page snap shot profile printed in my favourite magazine Oxygen (a personal dream come true).

Why do you love the sport

I love everything about it....seeing my training buddies at the gym every day to training with heavy weights and constantly mixing it up, the preparation for getting on stage and watching my body evolve and change through the process.  Probably what I love as much, if not more about the sport, is the camaraderie of the other figure girls and guys.  It’s a great community to belong to.

Having moved to the Sunshine Coast and not knowing anyone it helped me to make some amazing friends here on the coast and interestingly all over the country and overseas thanks to Facebook.

And totally unexpectedly I have received a great deal of joy knowing that I have inspired others to start living an active and healthy lifestyle.....recently a young girl at my gym who has been inspired to compete showed me her diary and on the front page is a photo of me posing in a competition. I was blown away....what a great feeling and what a wonderful compliment.

What I hope others may gain from reading this?

I hope they are inspired and find the courage to do it too if that is their desire.  It truly is possible....you just have to make the decision and believe in yourself....just take each day and each meal one at a time and enjoy the training. If you go off track a bit....just decide to get back on track and keep going.  It’s all about being as consistent as possible but not beating yourself up if you slip up slightly.  Go on....you can do it!

What are your goals / aspirations from the sport

My goals....well I would love to win a figure title and qualify and represent Australia at the Natural Olympia.  I would also love to travel overseas to compete one year and to get on the cover of Oxygen Magazine would be the pinnacle.

I’m also undertaking my personal trainers Cert III and IV so it would be great to put that to use in the future and help others reach their fitness and lifestyle goals.  I should be finished by October.

I am also in prep mode at the moment for INBA Qld Titles in September.
